A first for X-Press Boat Club - Surf Rowing in The UK National League
Luckily for us flat water rowers, the 5th and final national league event was held in Bournemouth where surfing skills were barely put to the test.  Although our starts were a bit below average (they include jumping into the boat) we stayed together well, taking heed to keep watching our blades (yes this is what you are supposed to do!).  Remarkably we repeatedly gained ground against other boats especially around the buoy.  Having the UK Surf League Chairman as Sweep (cox) must have counted for something as he counted us down into the bend where he and and Roy held Roy's oar fast while the stroke siders drew us around it.  Bryan (at bow) timed his leaps out of the boat to perfection to sprint up the shore to the finish flag.
After 3 Round Robins, we made it into the final to finish a very credible 3rd out of the 6 finalists losing out to the European champions and their rivals.  The ambiance was fabulous and the weather glorious, a memorable day with next year pencilled in.
